They met while working together at a  bank in Orange County, CA. One day Stephanie needed help with her car, the Suzuki SX4 (Lucy) and asked Derek for help, since he had a tire shop business at that time. Stephanie came by the shop with some jalapeño poppers from Jack in the Box and the rest was history. They became best friends and enjoyed finding the best tacos, gumbo, and of course, hot pot in town.

They traveled across the US together for over five months on Project KOD bus and knew after that experience they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together.
